Frequently Asked Questions:

I lost a piece of jewellery. Where do I start?

Your first step is usually to contact your insurance company and open a claim. They will provide you with a claim number and explain what documentation they require.

If they ask you to obtain a jewellery replacement quote, appraisal, or estimate, we can help.

What is a jewellery replacement quote?

A replacement quote estimates the cost of replacing your lost or damaged item with a piece of comparable type and quality.

We use the information available about your original piece—such as an appraisal, receipt, photographs, diamond or gemstone certificates, and item descriptions—to determine an appropriate comparable replacement.

What should I bring with me?

If available, please bring:
Your insurance claim number and adjuster information
A copy of your appraisal
Original purchase receipt
Diamond or gemstone certificates
Photographs of the jewellery
Any documentation describing the item

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything. We can review what you have and explain what additional information may be helpful.

Do you work directly with insurance companies?

Yes. We work directly with a number of insurance companies and adjusters.

Depending on the insurance company and the type of claim, we may be able to communicate directly with your adjuster, submit the required quote or documentation, and assist with the replacement process.

Can you direct bill my insurance company?

In some cases, yes.

Some insurance companies allow us to invoice them directly for an approved replacement. Other insurers issue payment directly to the policyholder.

The process depends on your insurance company and your individual claim. We can explain how the process works once we review your claim information.

Does my insurance company pay me or the jewellery store?

That depends on your insurance company and policy.

Some insurers pay the jeweller directly once a replacement has been authorized. Others settle the claim with the insured, who can then arrange their replacement.

Your insurance adjuster determines how your particular claim will be settled.

Do I have to replace my jewellery with exactly the same item?

Not necessarily.

Insurance companies generally base a claim on replacing the lost or damaged item with something of comparable type and quality. Depending on your insurer’s approval and the terms of your policy, you may have some flexibility in selecting your replacement.

We can help you understand the options available for your particular claim.

What if I can’t find anything exactly like my original piece?

That’s okay.

Jewellery styles change, and many pieces are unique or no longer available. We can help source a comparable piece or, when appropriate, explore creating a custom replacement based on the characteristics of your original jewellery.

Can I choose something different?

Often, there may be flexibility in what you choose as your replacement, but this depends on the terms of your insurance settlement.

We can help you explore your options while making sure you understand what amount has been authorized by your insurance company.

Can I upgrade my replacement?

Depending on your claim and insurer, you may be able to select an item that exceeds the approved replacement amount and personally pay the difference.

For example, you may decide to choose a larger diamond, different setting, higher-quality stone, or completely different design.

We can discuss the options available once your claim has been approved.

Why is the replacement quote different from the value on my appraisal?

An appraisal value and an actual replacement quote are not necessarily the same thing.

An appraisal is typically prepared for insurance purposes and reflects an estimated retail replacement value at a particular point in time. A replacement quote is based on the cost and availability of replacing the item with a comparable piece at the time of the claim.

Your insurance company ultimately determines how the claim will be settled according to your policy.

My jewellery was custom made. Can you still help?

Yes.

If your lost item was custom made or unique, photographs, appraisals, certificates, receipts, and detailed descriptions can help us understand the original piece.

We can then explore options for recreating the design or producing a comparable replacement.

What if my diamond or gemstone was certified?

Please provide a copy of the certificate if you have one.

Certificates can contain important information about a diamond or gemstone’s characteristics and can be extremely helpful when sourcing a comparable replacement.

Can you work directly with my insurance adjuster?

In many cases, yes.

With the appropriate claim information and authorization, our Insurance Claims Specialist can communicate with your adjuster regarding quotes, replacement specifications, approvals, and other information they may require.

How long does the replacement process take?

Every claim is different.

Timing can depend on how quickly the claim is approved, whether an appropriate replacement is readily available, whether stones need to be sourced, and whether custom manufacturing is required.

Once we understand your claim and the replacement you have selected, we can provide a better idea of the expected timeline.

What happens after my insurance company approves the quote?

Once approval is received, we’ll guide you through the next steps.

Depending on your insurer, this may involve selecting your replacement, ordering or sourcing an item, beginning a custom design, arranging payment, or direct billing the insurance company.

I already received money from my insurance company. Can you still help me?

Absolutely.

Even if your insurance company has settled directly with you, we can help you explore replacement options and find or create a piece that suits you.

I’m overwhelmed by the insurance process. Can someone help me?

Yes—that’s exactly what our Insurance Claims Specialist is here for.

We’ll help you understand the jewellery side of the claim, explain the replacement process, prepare the necessary jewellery documentation, and work with your insurance company when applicable.

Every insurance company and policy is different, so we’ll help you understand the options available for your specific claim.
