Our gemological department offers jewellery appraisals for insurance purposes.
Need a jewellery appraisal? Find answers to common questions about our appraisal process, what to bring or how often to update your appraisal.
How long does the appraisal process take?
Turnaround time depends on our current workload. In general, please allow two weeks.
Can I get an appraisal while I wait?
While-you-wait appraisals are available only in special circumstances and at the appraiser’s discretion.
What should I bring?
Please bring any documents you have relating to the item:
- Previous appraisals: These may contain useful information, particularly if they were prepared when the item was purchased.
- Original purchase receipt: This may include the actual stone weights and grades.
- Diamond or gemstone report: These reports can provide important details about a stone’s characteristics and may help us source a comparable replacement.
Who performs the appraisal?
Our appraisals are carried out by qualified gemologists and a qualified appraiser.
What is an appraisal used for?
Most appraisals are prepared for insurance purposes, to provide documentation for items that meet or exceed the single-item limit on an insurance policy. We also carry out some probate appraisals.
Please check with your insurance provider to confirm what documentation your policy requires.
Is there a minimum item value for an appraisal?
As the average minimum insurance deductible is $500, we generally appraise items valued at more than $1,000.
Will the appraisal provide enough information to replace my item?
An appraisal records details such as the stones, weights and metal content. This information can help identify a replacement item in a similar style.
The appraised value reflects the item’s value on the day the appraisal is completed. If the appraisal is not updated regularly, changes in market prices—such as a rise in the price of gold—may mean the amount is no longer sufficient to cover a replacement. Regular updates may also be required by your insurance policy.
Does the item’s condition matter?
Yes. Condition is an important part of the appraisal. Missing stones, loose or worn claws, heavy wear and other damage should be addressed before the appraisal. This can help avoid condition-related issues if you later need to make an insurance claim.
How often should I update my appraisal?
We recommend updating your appraisal every two to three years, in line with your insurance policy. Check with your insurer for its specific requirements.
Why should I update my appraisal regularly?
Jewellery values can change over time. For example, gold prices may rise, while natural diamond prices may move in the opposite direction. These are just two of many factors that can affect the value of a piece.
How can an old appraisal affect my insurance coverage?
If an appraisal is out of date, its value may not be enough to cover the cost of replacing the item, leaving you to pay the difference. On the other hand, an appraisal that overstates the value may result in higher insurance premiums.
How much does an appraisal cost?
Our appraisal fee is $100 per item as of October 1, 2026. Fees may change, please contact us for current pricing.
